- The opening couplet is called a matla and it sets up a scheme rhyme called quafia.
- When it occurs in both lines it is called a refrain also called a radif.
- It must have 5 lines
- The last word in the second line must all be the same
- There must be a repeating theme
- The couplets should be autonomous, in other words a poem in itself but it does connect to the other couplets
- The poets name enters in the final couplet
